| David Laurie Phillips | ||||||
| David was last seen traveling by train from Kansas to Los Angelas on June 10, 1883. He was going to visit his nephew, Dr. William A. Phillips at his home in California. David sent a telegram to his nephew from Las Vegas, New Mexico, and again from Yuma, New Mexico. However, when the train arrived David was not on it. Dr. Phillips was given an urgent message from someone on the train which stated David had acted incoherently at the Yuma station. Around 1:00 AM on June 10, 1883 (about seventy miles later), the train made a brief stop at Volcano Springs, and as the train was pulling away the roadmaster saw David leap from the train. It was reported he was without his hat, shoes, or coat. The original missing persons report can't be found, and his body was never recovered. His family put up a monument in his memory in Gypsum Hill Cemetery in Salina, Kansas. The memorial says, "So he died there and the Lord buried him in the Valley but no man knoweth of his sepulchre unto this day."
