| Joan Marie Butler | ||||||||
| Joan was last seen during the early morning hours of Sunday, June 18th, 1989. She lived alone in Overland Park, and she was a buyer at a Kansas City advertising agency. That Saturday evening she spent with friends, and evidence indicates she made it home to her apartment but was interrupted. The clothes she was wearing Saturday evening were there, along with a half eaten piece of toast, a half smoked cigarette, and one contact lens. Her and her red Corsica rental car were missing, along with $900.00 in her bank account. A neighbor reported hearing a loud thud at approximately 4:30 AM on the morning of Joan's disappearance. On June 25th, the rental was found in a Lenexa, Kansas apartment complex. As police arrived at the scene and waited, a man approached the vehicle and opened the trunk. Police approached the man, but he was able to escape. The car was preliminarily processed at the scene, and was further processed on June 26th. Among the evidence found was fingerprints belonging to Richard Grissom, as well as a wallet containing the ID for Grissom and his other aliases. The glove compartment contained an air pistol, pellets, and C02 cartridges. In the trunk, a drop of blood was found, which was later linked to Joan Butler. On the outside of the car there were scratches similar to those made by thick brush and small tree limbs, as well as a fine light dust and loose gravel on the underside of the car. During the 1990 trial, testimony stated a close associate first noticed Grissom driving the car on Tuesday morning, June 20th. On June26th, Christine Rusch and Theresa Brown, who were roommates, disappeared from their apartment in Lenexa, Kansas. They were last seen on June 25th, and Christine was last spoken to on the phone June 26th. Two days later, Grissom's car, packed with all of his belongings, was found parted outside a Grandview apartment. Credit cards and jewelry belonging to Rusch and Brown were found inside his car, along with keys to the apartments of Christine and Theresa, and also Joan. Grissom operated a painting company and had master keys to apartment complexes across the area. On July 7th, Grissom was convicted of the murders of Joan Butler, Christine Rusch, and Theresa Brown. Kansas did not have the death penalty in 1990, which Grissom was well aware of. During the investigation, he alluded the women's remains would not be found in Missouri since they have the death penalty. The women have never been found even after intensive local and national searches.
